If you’re like me, then you’ve been thinking about improving your style as your New Year resolution. Don’t let these pictures fool you. I don’t dress like this all the time…though I wish I did.
We all get tied up with being business owners, mothers, everyone’s problem solver, and superwomen. Though, when it comes to putting forth effort for us, energy and creativity are no longer there. I have a side business I am growing in addition to my full-time job and trying to still have a life. It’s all so exhausting. So it’s no wonder that when it’s time to get dressed…I tend to flop.
So, my New Year resolution is to dress more like the woman I want to become. Though we are nowhere near “having it all together”, we don’t have to look or feel that way when we walk out the door. So here are amazing tips we all can follow to have our best style in 2020!
Gather Your Best Looks
First things first, let’s look at the outfits you wore last year and felt your absolute best in. Chances are, you felt so good about yourself that day that you took pictures and posted them on social media. Gather about 4-7 of those looks and let’s dissect them.
All of those looks have something in common. Either you felt comfortable about your body, they might have accented your best feature, or maybe it was the type of shirt, pants or skirt you wore that hugged your figure in the best way.
Whatever your reason may be, write it down on a sheet of paper. Let me give you a couple of my reasons as an example. I love wearing tunics because they require little styling to make a cute outfit. Also, I love wearing belts around my waist because they prevent me from looking slouchy in tops and dresses that are oversized or flowy.
Replicate and Repeat
Here is the key to making sure getting dress is easy and effortless while resulting in flawless looks every time. Let’s refer to the reasons you just wrote about those 4-7 outfits that made you feel amazing. Now, read the examples I provided. Notice I associated the benefit of my outfit to a certain item I was wearing (a tunic and a belt).
Now let’s do the same thing for your list of reasons. What is the item of clothing you wore that made you feel bomb in that outfit you were referring to? Was it a hat, a skirt, a certain type of dress, or a kind of shirt?
Whatever that item is that you love so much…let’s add several of those to your wardrobe. For instance, I love tunics so I own 8 different kinds. The color black makes me feel chic, so half of my closet is black. I also love belts around my waist, so I own 10 different belts. Do you get where I am coming from?
Take what felt good about your original outfit, add more of that to your wardrobe, and replicate it with different looks. Congratulations, you just found your style!
Have Various Staple Pieces
Outside of the pieces that make you feel amazing, I would advise adding several staple pieces to your wardrobe as well.
What are “staple pieces,” you ask? Don’t worry; I got you covered on the main items that should be in every fashionista’s closet!
Plain Shirts
Little Black Dresses (LBD)
Blazers
Skinny Jeans
Pencil Skirts
Ballet Flats
Have “High/Low” Fashion Looks
When you are getting started on establishing your personal style, you want your price point to be very affordable. I would advise having affordable clothes and staple pieces and only invest in your accessories.
Now, of course, I can’t tell you what is “affordable” based on your income, because I’m not here to get in your business. But since we are working on developing our personal style for our New Year resolution, let’s start by keeping things simple.
Designate a dollar amount you are comfortable with spending on clothes. You should already know what that amount is because you get antsy about purchasing anything over that price. When it comes to your accessories (handbags, belts, shoes, jewelry, etc.) don’t be afraid to spend a little more…only if you want!
Focus on your favorite brands
Since we are busy women, let’s focus on keeping things simple. For the first 6 – 8 months, try purchasing from the brands that you are already in love with.
Not sure what retailers offer plus size clothes? Don’t worry, I already have a list of over 200 retailers and brands that cater to plus size women. You can get this to your email today by clicking here and signing up for my newsletter!
Focus on the outcome & not your mood
Now, I’m sure you guys already know about this one, but I thought it would be worth bringing up anyway. Try to focus on you feeling good after you have gotten dressed, and not the fact that you have to get up and get dressed.
We all want to feel our best, but after completing our to-do list we are beyond over it for the day. But just think of how much more of a superwoman you would be if you do what you do, and walk out the house looking fabulous!
I hope you guys enjoyed these tips. Now let’s focus on this New Year resolution together and walk through 2020 with the best style and even better confidence!
